What is Prospective Thinking and what does a Chief Poetic Officer do?
You’ve heard about Collective Intelligence (collaboration and decision processes), Multi-Perspective taking (viewing situation in other point of views using empathy), Problem Solving methods, 6 Sigmas and even “6 Hats”, Critical Thinking (the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement), you’ve read about Design Thinking and other similar out-of-the box thinking techniques, but at a time when the world is reinventing the future, what can prospective and “Prospective Thinking” bring to organizations? Prospective (meaning “looking forward”) is the art of imagining possible and impossible scenarios for the future based on the data available today. In France, The Institute for Desirable Futures does precisely this for society changemakers.
And along with this current shift and multiplication in thinking methods, we have seen the emergence of new roles in companies to accompany their transformation. If Chief Executive Officers -such as the renown Steve Jobs or Jack Welchs- have always been the ones “leading” companies to success, in the past few years, Open Innovation Directors have appeared in major companies to bring a start-up like “intrapreneurial” spirit, and more recently, with all the burn out/job out issues and “happiness at work” debates, Chief Happiness Officers have become real actors inside organizations to make employees “smile” and love their company and their job with a sense of meaning to their role. And in the near future, we will see appearing more and more Chief Inspirational Officers or even Chief Poetic Officers who’s mission are to help employees find their ideal place and added value inside the company as well as to “inspire” them to travel in the future and bring back new ideas and visions to implement today, whether for their role or for the company.
This is where the two link together, Poetry and Prospective, as a Pole, a new Wellbeing Unit and a dream lab maker.
I’ve been a Chief Poetic Officer for more than two years now, a corporate poet and a Human Wealth Developer, founder of The Ink of the Future (La Plume Du Futur). I give creative conferences and poetic inspirational speeches to major companies and entrepreneurs in France and around the world. My mission: unleash human potential, spark creativity, “unlimit” the future and release collective intelligence. By inviting managers and collaborators into poetic journeys into the future, I try to inspire, touch the human side within them, free their voice, connect them to the “be” along with the “do”, make people go out of their comfort zone and enter their true “talent zone”, design new visions and dreams of innovation by projecting themselves into the future to visualize it without boundaries, from imagination to inspiration, dreams to actions. We work with the company on their values, the meaning of their employees’ mission, the corporate and teamwork culture, the digital transformation, horizons of 2020 to 2030, etc. As Napoleon Hill once said, “a goal is a dream with a deadline”.
To give a few examples, Elen Musk, inventor and founder of Space X or Tesla Motors is a pure visionary: he projects himself into as far as 2100 to foresee new trends, how the world market will expand and what it will need at that time, hence his proposal to go to Mars and make Mankind a “multiplanetary species”. In the Silicon Valley, artists and particularly poets are currently called in for the user interface dialogue inside Artifical Intelligence, to make it more “human friendly”. Some CEOs also use poetry for relaxation, creativity, inspiration and to clarify their thinking. Poets can be both dreamers and doers, idealists and realists. In ancient Greek, poetry actually means “to make, to create”. With poetic conferences in Chanel, Orange, Air France, Sanofi Aventis, Société Générale, European Patent Agency, Stand Up for Passion, OuiShare Festival, HEC Executive MBA, etc, Corporate Poetry is becoming more and more trendy. After all, don’t we all now refer -and CEOs do too- to daily inspirational (poetic) quotes, whether on social media sharing, debates inspiration or in Powerpoint presentations?
To present briefly the creative process of “Prospective Thinking”, here are a few steps using Corporate Poetry in workshops:
- Pick a subject that you are passionate about and of which you need break through solutions
- Research the subject, read books, articles, go to conferences, talk to experts, watch videos
- Do a personal synthesis of all your research, learning and key findings
- Take a deep breath and clear your mind to have a fresh perspective
- Write, in a poetic format, your dreams and visions for the future by projecting yourself in a specific year or period of time, visualizing what you would like it to become or not become
- List the possible scenarios and impossible scenarios that have emerged
- Chose the best possible scenario and go for it. The people who change the world are always the “crazy ones”
- From imagination to inspiration, dreams to actions, make it happen, today!
